Boohoo's French Fine Is A Warning For Every UK Brand Selling Into France

2 min read

France's consumer watchdog, the DGCCRF, has fined Boohoo UK €224,950 for leaving environmental product information off its websites.

The rules it broke come from France's anti waste law (known as AGEC), and they apply to brands above the size thresholds that sell textiles to French shoppers, wherever those brands are based.

It's a French rule with a very British victim. If you ship to France, keep reading.

What Boohoo got wrong

According to the DGCCRF's findings, reported in September 2026:

  • 1,863 items didn't show the countries where weaving, dyeing and printing, and garment making took place.

  • 773 textile products with more than 50% synthetic fibre were missing the line "releases plastic microfibres into the environment during washing".

  • 1,863 products had no product sheet on their environmental qualities and characteristics.

This came a month after a separate €2.33 million French fine for misleading price reductions. Different issue, same watchdog.

Who the rules apply to

Since January 2025, Article 13 of AGEC applies to businesses with turnover above €10 million putting more than 10,000 units a year on the French market.

The information has to be digital, free, accessible when someone buys, and kept available for two years.

How those thresholds are counted for a UK business selling cross border is worth checking with a French compliance specialist. I cannot confirm the exact calculation for every setup.

Why smaller brands should care

€10 million turnover isn't a giant. Plenty of growing UK brands sit right around there.

And the data AGEC asks for (where each step happened, what the fibres are) is the same data the EU Digital Product Passport will ask for. Collect it once, use it twice.

The DGCCRF went through thousands of listings to build this case. "They won't bother checking a brand our size" isn't much of a plan.

What to do now

  1. Check your French sales volumes and turnover against the thresholds.

  2. Ask suppliers for the country of weaving, dyeing and printing, and making for every style.

  3. Flag every product over 50% synthetic for the microfibre line.

  4. Build a product sheet page for French shoppers and keep it live for two years.
