Recertifying As A B Corp? Here Is What Is Actually Different.

If your B Corp recertification date falls anywhere in 2026, you are not doing the same process you did three years ago. B Lab began recertifying existing B Corps on the new B Lab Standards, and the points system that got you certified last time is gone.

What changed, in practice

The old model let you offset a weak area with a strong one, as long as your total score cleared 80 points. The new standards remove that trade off completely. You now have to meet minimum requirements across seven mandatory impact topics, with no averaging your way past a weak spot.

Companies with a recertification date between 1 January and 31 December 2026 get a 12 month extension to their due date, automatically, to give you room to work through the new requirements.

If you cannot commit to recertifying by 27 September 2026, you can instead sign an amendment to the B Corp Agreement committing to future recertification on V2.2.

Where the effort actually lands

• Areas you have already invested in, workplace culture, fair wages, JEDI, will likely need light touch updates to map onto the new topic structure

• Climate Action is now a mandatory, must meet topic rather than a nice to have, and this is where I am seeing the biggest gap for fashion and textile clients, since most emissions sit in Scope 3 supply chain data, not your own office

• Third party verification is now part of the process, not just a self reported score

• You will need to show a credible improvement plan at recertification, not just hold your existing score steady

What this means for you

If your last certification leaned on strong governance or community scores to cover a thinner environmental picture, that is exactly the gap the new standards are built to close.

Start by mapping your current B Impact Assessment answers against the seven new impact topics rather than waiting for your recertification window to open.

Climate Action is the one to start early. Scope 3 data takes months to gather properly, not weeks, and a credible climate transition plan is not something you write the week before your assessment is due.
